Becoming a coach

We would be delighted to invite you to register for the All Wales Coaching Network if you are employed in the public service or third sector in Wales, a qualified coach and want to provide wider public service / third sector coaching.

More information

  • The short answer is anyone who wants to improve the way they perform their role and who wants to make the most of what they have to offer. Coaching only works if the person being coached (the 'coachee') is prepared to make changes and is ready to explore how they can make the most of their skills and abilities. Examples include:

    • starting a new role
    • taking on a new team
    • improving your own performance
    • preparing for a career change
    • dealing with periods of uncertainty

  • The following table will help you to decide whether coaching is likely to meet your needs:

    A coach possesses specialist coaching skills which are applicable in a range of situations.A mentor possesses specialist professional / organisational knowledge.
    A coach has a holistic approach and focuses on specific goals or areas for improvement, often as much about personal as professional development.A mentor focuses on work-based professional issues and career development.
    A coaching relationship is generally short / medium term, sometimes timebound; sessions are usually structured in nature, with regular scheduled meetings.A mentoring relationship is more flexible and can last over a long period of time with periods of little / no contact.
    A coach seeks answers from the coachee and does not offer advice.A mentor may offer advice, provide opportunities and introduce a mentee to professional networks.
    1. If you think that coaching is for you, you can sign up to this website to search for a coach. You will need to be an employee of a public service organisation or registered charity operating in Wales.
    2. You'll need to agree to our ethical code for coaching (below). A full set of terms and conditions is also available.
    3. You can filter the list of available coaches by using the tick boxes at the side of the list. You can also type in the search box at the top of the list. This is especially helpful if you're looking for a specific coach or a particular phrase.
    4. Once you've found a coach that suits your needs, contact them using the details that they've provided in their profile.
  • As a client, you agree:

    • that the prime purpose of the coaching contract is to support, maintain and enhance your personal development and performance over an agreed period of time.
    • that all that is discussed between yourself and your coach will be treated in absolute confidence, unless you both agree that information can be shared with another party.
    • to prepare for each session, to be punctual and to actively participate.
    • to ensure that your coaching sessions are not interrupted, in order to give full attention to the interaction.
    • that to the best of your ability, you will meet the agreed objectives and action plan set out at the end of each session.
    • to carry out any follow-up actions that you choose to commit to within the coaching sessions as per agreed timescales.
    • to complete all evaluation forms during and following the final session.

    We are delighted to invite you to register to be part of the All Wales Coaching Network. This is an opportunity for you to join a network of coaches across Wales, find new coaching opportunities and access training.

Common questions

  • The list is free to access for all employees of public service organisations and registered charities operating in Wales. There is no charge for coaching provided.

  • You'll need to agree to our ethical code above to use the online database. A full set of terms and conditions is also available.

  • We would like to find out as much information as possible about the benefits of coaching and the impact it has on improving services. We will ask you to complete a short survey to evaluate the quality of your coaching relationship.

  • Please go to our network page if you are employed within the Welsh public service and/or third/voluntary sector, and would like to register to be part of the All Wales Coaching Network.
